Chargefox chargers need a live path between the app, Chargefox’s servers, and the pedestal’s modem. When that path fails, the bay can sit powered up and still refuse to start. Drivers arrived, plugged in, and got stuck at the “start session” step.
NRMA’s network uses mixed connectivity providers, so some sites kept working. Tesla Superchargers run a different backend and were less exposed, though a few drivers still saw app glitches.

Why Public Charging Needs Mobile Connectivity
Most networked DC chargers in Australia don’t behave like a dumb socket. Your phone talks to the network. The network talks to the charger. Payment, load management and remote diagnostics all ride that link.

Plan redundancy on long trips. If you’re counting on a single Chargefox site 200 km out, know the next-nearest bay and whether your range can reach it.
Watch carrier overlap. If Chargefox gear leans on Telstra and your phone is Telstra too, you’re stacking risk. An Optus or Vodafone handset (or dual-SIM) can still open apps when one carrier is dark.
