AEVA Sought Charging Fallbacks After July’s Telstra Outage

AEVA called for stronger public-charging fallback arrangements after the 8 July 2026 Telstra outage, according to its statement to CarExpert. A proposed fallback is not evidence that a charger already supports it or that a new Australian rule has commenced.

The reported request

In CarExpert’s 9 July report, AEVA vice president Jo Oddie advocated clearer fallback pathways, more resilient connectivity and a default free charge when connectivity is lost. The originating interview is the source for that position; we did not obtain a separate technical specification from AEVA.

The earlier version of this article added time caps, an authentication-method requirement, operator responses and possible enforcement arrangements that the cited material did not establish. Those details have been removed.

Ad-hoc payment does not mean guaranteed offline power

The European Commission’s AFIR explanation describes ad-hoc charging without a longer-term operator contract. That payment requirement should not be presented as a universal obligation to provide free charging when communications fail.

A phone-independent payment method can help with poor phone reception while still depending on working station or payment infrastructure. Do not infer offline capability from an RFID reader, contactless logo or the presence of automatic start.

Plan with the options actually supported

Check the chosen unit’s current instructions and set up an accepted payment method before travelling. Keep another compatible, accessible stop within a sensible reserve. If the unit is offline, contact the operator rather than assuming it will switch to free power.

Read our dated outage account for the incident and the payment guide for current method checks. This archive report does not establish adoption of AEVA’s proposal.

Compare public charging stops

Compare recorded connectors, power and access, then confirm current details with the operator.
